American Saddlebred

Often called the “Peacock of the Horse World,” the American Saddlebred is known for its striking presence, arched neck, and naturally high head carriage. Saddlebreds can be shown as three-gaited (walk, trot, canter) or five-gaited, adding the slow gait and rack — two smooth, animated gaits unique to the breed.

Saddlebreds are frequently the breed most associated with Saddle Seat riding, and they’re a cornerstone of our training program.

Morgan

The Morgan is one of the oldest American horse breeds, prized historically for its versatility as a do-it-all farm, driving, and riding horse. In the Saddle Seat world, Morgans bring a slightly more compact, powerful build alongside the same animated gaits and elegant carriage.

Morgans are often praised for being a bit more forgiving for riders still building confidence, while still delivering the flash and animation Saddle Seat is known for.

Hackney

The Hackney — technically a category that includes both Hackney Horses and Hackney Ponies — is renowned for having the most extreme, high-stepping action of the three breeds. Originally developed in England as a harness and carriage breed, Hackneys bring a dramatic, almost theatrical gait that’s instantly recognizable in the show ring.

Known for:

• The most exaggerated, animated leg action
• Compact, powerful build
• A bold, spirited temperament

Because of their intensity and drive, Hackneys are often paired with more experienced riders and drivers.
