From First Lesson to First Show: What to Expect in Our Training Program

Every competitive rider started exactly the same way: with a first lesson. If you or your child are just getting started at Licciardello Stables and wondering what the path from beginner to show ring actually looks like, here’s an honest look at how our training program progresses.

Stage 1: Building the Fundamentals

Every rider, regardless of age, begins with the fundamentals — proper position, basic steering, and comfort in the saddle at a walk and trot. This stage isn’t about speed; it’s about building a secure, correct foundation that everything else is built on.

At this stage, riders typically work with calm, experienced school horses matched specifically to beginners.

Stage 2: Developing Independence in the Saddle

As riders grow more comfortable, lessons begin to focus on independence — steering without guidance, transitioning between gaits, and developing a more refined riding position. This is where the specific demands of Saddle Seat riding start to take shape: an upright posture, quiet hands, and clear communication with the horse.

Stage 3: Introducing Show-Ring Skills

Once a rider has a solid foundation, training starts to introduce skills specific to the show ring:

  • Riding in a group setting alongside other horses
  • Executing gait transitions on cue
  • Building ring awareness and pattern work
  • Developing the poise and presentation Saddle Seat judges look for

This stage often includes practice in our arenas set up to mimic real show-ring conditions.

Stage 4: First Show Preparation

Before a rider’s first show, training shifts toward preparation — not just riding skill, but show-day logistics. Riders and families learn about:

  • What to expect on show day, from warm-up to class time
  • Proper show attire and turnout expectations
  • How classes are judged in Saddle Seat competition
  • How to stay calm and focused under the added pressure of the ring

Stage 5: The First Show

For many riders, the first show is less about winning and more about experience — walking into the ring, executing what they’ve practiced, and building the confidence that comes from competing for the first time. Our trainers are there every step of the way, from warm-up to post-class feedback.

Every Rider Progresses at Their Own Pace

Not every rider is chasing the show ring, and that’s completely fine — many of our students ride purely for the joy of it. But for those who do want to compete, our training program is built to take riders from their very first lesson all the way to a confident, well-prepared show debut.
