Every week, parents bring their kids to Licciardello Stables asking the same question: “Is my child old enough — or ready — to start riding?” The good news is that horseback riding welcomes a wide range of ages and personalities. Here’s what we look for, and how to know if now is the right time.

There’s No Single “Right Age”

While many riding programs, including ours, welcome children starting around age 5 or 6, readiness has less to do with a specific birthday and more to do with a child’s comfort around animals, ability to follow simple instructions, and basic physical coordination. Some kids are ready to hop in the saddle at 5; others thrive more starting at 8 or 9. Both are perfectly normal.

Signs Your Child May Be Ready

Look for these everyday signs of readiness:

• Curiosity about horses — asking questions, watching videos, or lighting up at the mention of a barn visit
• Comfort with animals — calm, gentle behavior around family pets or animals they’ve met before
• Ability to follow directions — can listen to and act on simple, one-step instructions from a teacher or coach
• Reasonable attention span — can stay engaged in an activity for 20–30 minutes
• Physical coordination — can balance, sit upright, and hold onto something with both hands

If most of these sound like your child, they’re likely ready to try a first lesson.

What a First Lesson Looks Like

At Licciardello Stables, first lessons are designed to build comfort before building skill. New riders start with:

1. Meeting their horse — learning the horse’s name, personality, and how to approach safely
2. Grooming basics — brushing and connecting with the horse before riding
3. Safety equipment — getting fitted with a helmet and understanding basic barn safety rules
4. First time in the saddle — a calm, guided introduction to sitting, steering, and walking

Our instructors are experienced with first-timers of every age and adjust pacing so no child feels rushed or overwhelmed.
